Edward Bellamy was more monstrous than Marx.  Bellamy wrote the book "Looking Backward" in 1887, and it described his vision of totalitarian socialism for the future.  Bellamy wanted the government to take over all schools and create an “industrial army” (http://rexcurry.net/pledgebackward.html).  The book was an international bestseller.  In 1892, Francis Bellamy (Edward's cousin) helped as a national socialist in the U.S. and created the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag using a straight-armed salute (http://rexcurry.net/pledge1.html).  Government-schools spread and they mandated racism and segregation by law and did so through WWII and beyond (http://rexcurry.net/stopthepledge4.html).  The Bellamy's share blame for inspiring WWII, the Holocaust and the Wholecaust.

Edward Bellamy’s international best-seller was translated into 20 different languages, including Russian, German, Italian, and Chinese.  It was popular among the elite in pre-revolutionary Russia, and Lenin’s wife was known to have read the book, because she wrote a review of it.  John Dewey and the historian Charles Beard intended to praise the book when they stated that it was equaled in influence only by Karl Marx's Das Kapital.

Das Kapital was published in 1867, and Marx's Communist Manifesto was published in 1848.  Bellamy's book (1887) was more contemporaneous with the formation of the industrial armies of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the National Socialist German Workers’ Party and with WWII, the Holocaust and the Wholecaust.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics began in 1917.  The National Socialist German Workers’ Party came into existence in 1920 (with electoral breakthroughs in 1930 and dictatorship in 1933).   In 1922, Mussolini gained power.  The People's Republic of China began in 1949.

WWII began in 1939 when Poland was invaded by the National Socialist German Workers’ Party and by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, as allies in their scheme to divide up Eastern Europe. http://rexcurry.net/socialistwar.html

While the Holocaust was monstrous, it was part of the bigger Wholecaust. Under the industrial army of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics,  62 million people were slaughtered; the People's Republic of China, 35 million; and the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, 21 million (numbers from Professor R. J. Rummel's article in the Encyclopedia of Genocide (1999)) (see http://rexcurry.net/socialists.jpg).

Benito Mussolini began his climb to power as the leader of the Socialist Party of Italy.  Between 1912 and 1914 he was the editor of the Socialist Party newspaper, "L'Avanti."  In 1914 he started his own socialist newspaper "Il Popolo d'Italia" ("The people of Italy").  In late 1937, Mussolini visited Germany and pledged himself to support the National Socialist German Workers’ Party.  In 1938, he introduced his ‘reform of customs.’”  Hand-shaking was suddenly banned as unhygienic: a salute was to be used instead - the right forearm raised vertically.  The "Roman salute" is a myth (http://rexcurry.net/pledgesalute.html).  He also imposed a new march on the Italian Army which was simply the goose-step of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party.  The most notorious instance of Italy imitating the National Socialist German Workers’ Party was in the racist laws imposed in November 1938.

Before and during it all (from 1892), children in the U.S. attended government-schools where racism and segregation were mandated by law, and where they performed a straight-armed salute to the U.S. flag, and were forced to robotically chant a Pledge written by a national socialist who wanted to produce an “industrial army” for totalitarian socialism as popularized worldwide in a best-selling novel.  It was the same segregation described in Bellamy's book "Equality" where blacks are allowed to participate in Bellamy's  "industrial army" but kept separate from whites.

In his article "How I Came to Write Looking Backward" (From The Nationalist, May 1889) Bellamy boasted that his "industrial army" idea was inspired by the military army and Bellamy's desire to use the same military system for all of society in his totalitarian scheme. "What inference could possibly be more obvious and more unquestionable than the advisability of trying to see if a plan which was found to work so well for purposes of destruction might not be profitably applied to the business of production now in such shocking confusion." Bellamy said as he sniped at the market.

Socialists sometimes disavow socialism's poverty and atrocities by whining that it "wasn't perfect Marxism."  If socialism's industrial armies did not perfectly follow Marx, then who else influenced them? The answer: Edward Bellamy.

"State governments indeed are more fiscally responsible than is Uncle Sam.  The most significant reason is that only Uncle Sam has a printing press. In the U.S., only he can pay his bills by literally making more money.  Aware of this fact, creditors face less risk of default by lending to the U.S. government than they face by lending, say, to the State of Kansas or to General Motors.
Combined with their native profligacy, their access to the printing press means that Congress and the President will seldom resist the easy option of deficit spending - a fact as certain as it is lamentable."  - Donald J. Boudreaux, Chairman, Department of Economics, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA
